Pocket Politics was founded in 2009. It is entirely independent and privately funded.

It was started on the basis that information on politics can be prohibitive in its scale, and that finding information on the subject can be daunting, in turn causing apathy. It seems to be a popular conception, we know people who are in their late 20's and never voted because of this! Coming up to the European elections in 2009, it dawned on us that we did not really know what the policies of each party were, and yet there we were about to cast votes on the future of the European Union. We thought 'what if there was a place that collated all policy information in one place for ease?', and this is the result.

Pocket Politics did well during its first major election - the 2010 UK General Election, and we heard from many people that found the site useful. The site will now continue to grow, and will cover other democracies, with more ways of comparing policies to help make the political world a little clearer.

We are always told that having a vote is a special thing, that our ancestors fought for our freedom and democracy, and we at Pocket Politics agree. It can seem like politics is out of our reach, or that it and our everyday lives are entirely separate. This should not be and is not the case.

There are a few tenets Pocket Politics stands for:

  • Freedom of information for all
  • Clarity and brevity of that information
  • No bias

The population of a democracy should be fully armed to exercise their right to vote, and know precisely what they are voting for. Voter apathy should be non-existent. Turnout should be 100%. We believe that the more information held by the public will also ensure politicians are held to account for their actions.

"Democracy...rests on a higher power than Parliament. It rests on an informed and cultivated and alert public opinion."

Dr. Eric Eustace Williams, from his speech on the first day of Trinidad and Tobago's independence from Great Britain, August 31st 1962

We are always happy to hear from our visitors, and if you feel you can help in any way, even better. Just use the contact link at the bottom of each page.

Above all, we hope you enjoy using Pocket Politics, and that you find what you are looking for.
